Kate Cooper used to be part of a group that tried to invent a chemical formula to control tornadoes. But things didn’t go as planned, and now she’s safely working as a meteorologist in New York. However, when an old friend shows up and tries to pull her back into fieldwork, she gets tempted. Along the way, she runs into Tyler Owens. He’s one of those guys who chase tornadoes for YouTube fame with his crew.
Despite some big studio names like Warner, Universal, and Amblin teaming up for this project, it’s not really a remake of that 1996 film with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton—it’s more like an upgrade using today’s tech that wasn’t available back then.
At one point, thinking he’d impress Kate, Tyler takes her to a rodeo only to find out it isn’t her first rodeo because she’s from the country herself. Director Lee Isaac Chung uses this moment to acknowledge that older audiences have seen these types of stories before; so it either has to grab the younger crowd or risk fading away.
The movie wraps up with this crazy storm that turns out to be just one stop on a wild ride that makes it feel more like you’re in some kind of test than watching a film.
They drop hints for fans of classic movies or folks lucky enough to have grown up with fairy tales instead of video games. There’s a nod to “The Wizard of Oz” through some character shout-outs. But really, what matters is how they push the limits with these mind-blowing special effects.
I won’t spoil all the surprises for you, but keep an eye on how many tornadoes there are and notice how each one steps up the destruction game. If you thought the first storm was intense, that’s just the warm-up. The action builds like a menu designed to leave you full and satisfied.
So, what’s holding it all together? The movie starts with what feels like an end and then amps up this rivalry that’s super intriguing to watch unfold. While back in the day, Michael Crichton laid down the story foundation, now his name just adds flavor because it’s less about plot and more about cranking up the chaos.
